Report of the 2016/2017 EAJRS Conservation/Preservation Working Group project

In this paper, we give the report of the 2016-2017 EAJRS Conservation/Preservation Working Group project: 1) A case study: Preservation practice carried out at the Berlin State Library; 2) Aid to the self-assessment of Care and Handling of Japanese special collection; 3) Introduction to the EAJRS Conservation WG website.

  1. A case study: Preservation practice at the Berlin State Library
In order to preserve its collection of pre-modern Japanese materials (books, manuscripts, maps etc.) the East Asia Department at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) is trying to provide a suitable environment by engaging in various activities such as digitizing the collection and making it available on the internet, storing the material in purpose-built boxes or by taking part in the library’s IPM (Integrated Pest Management) activities. This presentation is to introduce these measures as they might also be of interest to other institutions.
  2. Aid to the self-assessment of Care and Handling of Japanese special collection:
The WG is creating tools to assist libraries with Japanese special collections in establishing a responsible attitude to look after their collection. Two of the aid tools, “Preservation self-assessment checklist” and “Periodic preservation review checklist” will be introduced.
  3. EAJRS Conservation/Preservation WG website
Another aid that the WG has produced is its website. We shall introduce our website, including some of the newly uploaded contents.
