‘Integrated Studies of Cultural and Research Resources (ISCRR)’ at the National Museum of Japanese History in Japan (NMJH) approaches Japanese historical resources through interdisciplinary studies in the humanities and sciences using an information infrastructure. Classifying various cultural and research materials by time periods, regions, and research fields and analysing them with an interdisciplinary scope can lead to more advanced sharing of infrastructure and additional cooperative studies. In this workshop, we primarily show our new information infrastructure ‘Knowledgebase of Historical Resources in Institutes (khirin)’ and widely discuss perspectives on data integration.

  • ISCRR’s information infrastructure 'Knowledgebase of HIstorical Resources in INstitutes (khirin)'

Our new system – khirin – which is our core information infrastructure in ISCRR, was launched on 25 May 2018. In this workshop, we demonstrate this system, which flexibly contains resource data consisting of various resource information at museums and universities in Japan and provides these data as Linked Data that are mutually connected. The system also connects to image data in relevant local and international institutes using the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework). The khirin currently contains a part of the NMJH’s resource collection, Japanese historical and folklore survey cards (cultural resource catalogues in Japan developed by the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs in the 1970s), and historical document information from collaborations with Chiba University and Naruto University of Education. In the future, we are adding more data, opening up information on many historical resources in Japan, and developing an English translation of the available resource information.
