Research resources and standardization : in the digital age

In this digital age, almost all the research resources are digitized. Research papers are on electronic journals; books are digitized; paintings are digitized; in the science field, science data are digitized and they all are processed by computers. But, digital data itself is just a chunk of bit strings. How to interpret the bit string depends on the processing programs. And, for a program to communicate and inter-operate with others, there need a huge number of rules applied to the data. These rules are standards. 

The presentation introduces the standardization world. Types of standards are categorized; some notable standardization bodies are nominated. Then for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is the most significant international standardization body, its organization and the procedure of standardization are depicted. There are some issues in the current standardization system. It usually takes three years for one standard to be published. In some cases, it is difficult to collect proper stake holders. In addition, increase of number and pages of standards makes standard usage cost higher. Sometimes, users neglect standards, because of the cost.

Finally, the presentation discusses the issues on resource digitization and standards. Standards may change with time. It means a digital resource once made can become obsolete in future. This issue is known as "digital preservation" issue. Some other issues in this field are also discussed.




最後に,資料デジタル化と標準をめぐる問題点について述べる。標準は時につれて変化しうる。したがってある時点で作られたデジタル資料が後に標準と合わなくなるということがおこる。これはdigital preservation問題として知られている。このほかのいくつかの問題点ついても触れる。
