Towards Practical Solutions for the Transliteration of Japanese

This presentation discusses the necessity, challenges and possible future directions for the transliteration of Japanese, particularly in the international context. Transliteration is not merely a supplementary tool for non-native speakers; it can be said to be indispensable for native Japanese speakers as a foundation supporting the international dissemination and sharing of information.

It first addresses why transliteration is needed. The presenters emphasise that the need for transliteration depends heavily on context and audience, and that solutions developed in Japan suitable for native speakers may not serve non-native users well.

The presentation identifies the main problems of transliteration as orthographical rather than purely phonetic. These challenges are shared across several systems, including the Library of Congress (LC), Monumenta Nipponica, kana-based transliterations and even Japanese braille.

Several transliteration systems are analysed and compared, notably the LC Romanisation, Kenkyusha 4th edition and Monumenta Nipponica. The LC system is highlighted as the only current formal standard.

Additional systems such as Nippon-siki, Kunrei-siki, Hepburn usage in railway signage and Japanese braille are also introduced to illustrate the diversity of existing practices.

The presenters conclude that while data from most Hepburn-based systems could be merged with minimal quality loss, Kunrei-siki data would require systematic transformation to align with Hepburn conventions. They stress that no immediate changes should be made until the issues are fully understood, and propose a collaborative, advisory approach rather than enforcing a single system.
