18-19世紀の京都における「私設図書館」― 賀茂季鷹蔵書の形成・管理・運営について
本基調講演では、18-19世紀の京都における「私設図書館」の事例として、上賀茂神社の神官であった賀茂季鷹の蔵書（歌仙堂文庫）の形成・管理・運営について、具体的な資料に基づき報告したい。季鷹は三都（江戸・京都・大坂）に流通していた古書・新書を購入し、公家や地下国学者との人脈を生かして稀覯本を借り写し、それらを整序・編成するなどして蔵書を形成し、充実させた。雲錦亭と称する別荘に文庫を建て、源氏物語の巻名を付した箱に整理し、文庫の書籍目録を作成して蔵書を管理する一方で、蔵書を活用してテキストの校訂・注釈作業などの古典研究を行った。また自身の利用にとどまらず、人々の求めに応じて、贈与・貸し出しなどを広く、活発に行った。その運営の実態を検討し、季鷹の文庫が、優れたシステムをもつ「私設図書館」であったことを明らかにする。
Private Libraries in Kyoto during the 18th and 19th Centuries: The Formation, Administration, and Use of Kamo no Suetaka's Book Collection
This keynote lecture explores the case of a “private library” in Kyoto during the 18th and 19th centuries, focusing on the book collection of Kamo no Suetaka, a Shinto priest of the Kamigamo Shrine. Drawing on specific historical materials, the lecture examines the formation, administration, and operation of his collection, known as the Kasendō Bunko. Suetaka acquired both old and new books circulating in the three major cities of Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka. He also leveraged his connections with court nobles and kokugaku scholars to borrow and transcribe rare texts. Through systematic organization and compilation, he developed a rich and structured library. He constructed a library building at his villa, Unkintei, where he arranged the books in boxes labeled with chapter titles from The Tale of Genji and created detailed catalogues to manage the collection. Beyond personal use, Suetaka actively engaged in classical scholarship, including textual collation and annotation, and generously shared his resources through lending and gifting. This presentation will shed light on the actual practices of his library’s operation and demonstrate that Suetaka’s collection functioned as a sophisticated and well-managed private library.
