東京大学総合図書館におけるA.v.シーボルト関連資料「書簡集」のデジタル化と活用
東京大学では近年、学内資料のデジタル化を推進しており、様々な資料を東京大学デジタルアーカイブポータルから公開している。総合図書館では2025年、A.v.シーボルト関連資料のうち「書簡集」全点をポータルから公開した。内容・形態ともに多種多様な紙片からなる「書簡集」は、Acta Sieboldiana（ルール大学ボーフム編纂）で目録と翻刻が刊行されているが、デジタル画像にはActa Sieboldiana未掲載の紙片も含まれていることが分かっている。これは、石原あえか教授（東京大学）と堅田智子准教授（関西学院大学）による資料調査の成果である。
この書簡集はシーボルト父子研究だけでなく、A.v.シーボルトがお雇い外国人として長く日本にいたため、明治期の日本と欧州の政治外交関係や、当時の日本文化等を解明する上で重要な一次資料と言える。本発表では、資料の概要や未収載資料を含む全点デジタル公開の経緯に加え、今後の学術的活用可能性（例えばActa Sieboldiana に収録された翻刻テクストとの連携等）を提示する。その内容を欧州における日本資料専門家のコミュニティにおいて議論することで、今後のより良い活用法を検討したい。さらにシーボルトとゆかりの深いライデンにおいて発表することで、シーボルト研究者や日欧政治史等に携わるコミュニティにも可能な限り周知することを目的としている。

Digitization and Utilization of the "Briefe" within the Alexander von Siebold Materials at the General Library, University of Tokyo
In recent years, the University of Tokyo has been actively promoting the digitization of its institutional materials and making a wide range of resources available through the UTokyo Digital Archive Portal. In 2025, the General Library released the complete set of the “Briefe” from the A. v. Siebold-related materials on this portal.
This “Briefe” consisting of diverse paper fragments in both content and form, has been catalogued and transcribed in Acta Sieboldiana (edited by Ruhr University Bochum). However, it has been revealed that the digital images include items not covered in Acta Sieboldiana. This finding is the result of a detailed investigation conducted by Professor Aeka Ishihara (University of Tokyo) and Associate Professor Tomoko Katada (Kwansei Gakuin University).
The collection is not only valuable for research on Philipp Franz von Siebold and his son but also serves as an important primary source for understanding political and diplomatic relations between Japan and Europe during the Meiji period, as well as aspects of Japanese culture at the time, given Siebold’s long-term presence in Japan as a foreign advisor.
This presentation will outline the collection, explain the process leading to the full digital release—including previously unrecorded materials—and explore possibilities for future academic use, such as linking the digital images with the transcribed texts in Acta Sieboldiana. By presenting these findings to the European community of specialists in Japanese materials, the aim is to foster discussion on more effective methods of utilization. Furthermore, by presenting in Leiden, a city closely associated with Siebold, the project seeks to raise awareness among researchers in Siebold studies and the history of Japan–Europe relations.
