David W. Conde Collection held by the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, University of California, Berkeley: Challenges and Opportunities with an Archival Processing
As more materials have become digitized in recent years, libraries have increasingly turned their attention to special collections. In 2023, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library at UC Berkeley received a notable donation: an archival collection of approximately 26 cartons originally compiled by David. W. Conde (1906-1981). Conde was involved in Allied propaganda efforts during World War II, working in the U. S. Office of War Information’s Psychological Warfare Branch. From October 1945 to July 1946, he also served as Director of the Motion Picture Department within the Civil Information and Education (CIE) Section during the U. S.-led Allied occupation of Japan. This collection includes a wide range of materials: Conde’s manuscripts on Korea from the 1950s, film synopses and scripts, photographs of actors, posters and films submitted by Japanese film companies to the CIE for censorship, as well as propaganda leaflets, internal GHQ reports, and books and periodicals—mostly from the 1940s. Despite its significant historical value, the collection arrived in a rather disorganized condition, and the library staff lacked the subject expertise needed to properly assess and organize the materials. Fortunately, in 2024, Professor Keiko Sasagawa (Kansai University)—an expert in film studies—and her research team joined the project of organizing this collection with funding provided by Japan’s JSPS Kakenhi program. In addition, we received valuable support from the UCLA Film & Television Archive to help preserve the films, some of which were identified as being on highly flammable nitrate stock. Thanks to these contributions, we have begun the process of organizing and preserving the collection to ensure its accessibility and usefulness for future research. In this presentation, I will introduce the Conde Collection and share how our team has been working across the Pacific to safeguard and bring new understanding to this important archive.
カリフォルニア大学バークレー校C. V. スター東アジア図書館所蔵デイビッド・W・コンデ・コレクション: アーカイブ資料整理の課題と機会
近年、資料のデジタル化が進むにつれ、図書館の特殊コレクションへの関心は益々高まっている。2023年、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校C. V. スター東アジア図書館では、約26箱から成るデヴィッド・W・コンデ (1906-1981)のアーカイブ・コレクションという注目すべき寄贈を受けた。コンデは、第二次世界大戦中、アメリカ合衆国戦時情報局の心理作戦部で連合国のプロパガンダ活動に関わっていた。さらに、1945年10月から1946年7月までは、連合国による日本占領下で、民間情報教育局（CIE）の映画部門の班長も務めた。このコレクションには、1950年代の朝鮮に関するコンデの原稿、日本の映画会社が検閲用にCIEに提出した映画のあらすじや脚本、俳優の写真、ポスターやフィルムの他、プロパガンダのビラ、GHQの内部報告書、主に1940年代の書籍や雑誌等、多岐にわたる資料が含まれている。歴史的価値は高いものの、資料はかなり無秩序な状態で到着し、専門知識を欠く図書館スタッフには、適切な評価や整理が困難に思われた。幸いなことに、2024年には映画研究の専門家である笹川慶子教授（関西大学）を代表とする研究者チームが、JSPS科研費の助成を得て、本プロジェクトに参加し整理を助けてくれるようになった。加えて、UCLAの映画・テレビアーカイブが、可燃性の高いナイトレートフィルムの保管を支援してくれた。これらの助力があって、ようやくアクセス及び今後の研究に役立てようとこのコレクションの整備・保存活動を開始することができるようになった。本発表では、コンデ・コレクションの概要を紹介し、太平洋をはさんでどのように協力しながら、この重要なアーカイブの保存と新たな理解の創出に取り組んでいるのかお話ししたい。
