データ駆動研究を実現する「ARCリサーチスペース」をめぐる考察
立命館大学アート・リサーチセンター（ARC）は、25年以上にわたり日本文化・芸術研究に関わる資料の大規模なデジタルアーカイブを構築してきた。ARCでは、それらを活用する資料形態別の「データベース群」を独自開発してきており、それを使って研究者が効果的な“研究活動”を実施することが可能になっている。データベース群にはARC所蔵の資料のみならず、ARCがデジタル化した欧米の博物館が所蔵する資料を登録されており、かつ国文学研究資料館、国会図書館などが提供する資料も取り込まれている。現在、各々のデータベースが巨大化し、データはビッグデータと呼ぶよりは、「データレイク」と言ってよいほどの規模になっている。これらのデータは、ジャパンサーチにも登録されており、そこを入り口として一般市民も比較的容易にアクセスできる。しかし、本データベース群と付属するシステム、ツールは、それらがまとまって「ARCリサーチスペース」となり、単なる資料閲覧サイトではなく、研究者のためのオンライン研究環境として機能している。これは、昨今、デジタル・ヒューマニティーズを標榜する様々な組織が課題とする「データ駆動」を実現した環境となっているのである。本発表では、この「ARCリサーチスペース」がどのようにデータ駆動を可能としているのか、またなぜそれが可能なのかについて、システム自体の紹介とともに考察したい。
Considerations on "ARC Research Space" for Realizing Data-Driven Research
The Art Research Center (ARC) of Ritsumeikan University has been building a large-scale digital archive of materials related to Japanese culture and art for over 25 years. ARC has developed a unique set of databases organized by type of material, enabling researchers to conduct effective research activities. The database clusters include not only materials held by ARC, but also materials digitized by ARC from museums in Europe and North America, as well as materials provided by institutions such as the National Institute of Japanese Literature and the National Diet Library. Currently, each database has grown to such a size that the data can be described as a "data lake" rather than big data. These data are also registered in Japan Search, making them relatively easily accessible to the general public. However, the database group and related systems and tools are integrated into the "ARC Research Space," which functions as an online research environment for researchers rather than a simple document viewing site. This environment has realized the "data-driven" approach that various digital humanities organizations have been striving for in recent years. In this presentation, I will explore how the ARC Research Space enables data-driven research and why, as well as provide an introduction to the system itself.
