Changes in collection building and its provision at the Keio University Library
Keio University has its origins in the School of Dutch Studies founded by Fukuzawa Yukichi in 1858. Our current library collection has been created by adding materials such as Japanese and Chinese classics, rare materials and other items to the Western books collected since the end of the Edo period. Services related to the use of these collections were also expanded over time. Lending policies have changed, more materials are now available on the open shelves, many items have been digitised, and classes that make use of the special collections have started.
The Keio University Library has learned a lot from overseas initiatives in its history. Even now, the library complies with international standards in its cataloging rules and library systems. In terms of human resource development, we continuously send our librarians abroad as long-term stay trainees to some oversea libraries. In addition to the collection and preservation of unique materials, the library has also contributed to developments in Japanese studies through digitising classical books and other collections from the Edo period to the early Showa era and making them available to the public both in Japan and abroad.
In this presentation, I will discuss changes in the role that the Keio University Library has played and the challenges for future collection management, focusing on the building of the library's collections and its contribution to research and education by utilising these collections. I would specifically like to address the practice of digitising materials and the Classes using Special Collections called 'Kichosho Katsuyo Jugyo' at the Keio University Library.
