The botanical collection of Comte Hyppolyte de Castillon de Saint-Victor (1838-1898) and its digitization at the Collège de France
The Library of Japanese Studies of the College de France has recently digitized its collection of Comte Hippolyte de Castillon de Saint-Victor (1830-1898), a French land owner who lived in the south-west of the country. I talk about this collector and his collection, composed of books (90 titles, 256 vol., many of which are old botanical or horticultural Japanese books) and of other documents (80 letters, 4 of which are from Japanese, and handwriting notes). To talk about the collector, I focus on his relationship with two individuals; one is German, Gottfried Wagener (1831-1892), a well-known Japanese government employee (or “o-yatoi”) scientist, and the other, a Japanese botanist Ono Motoyoshi (1838-1880). At 1873 when Wagener found himself in Vienna, where he was sent by the Japanese government for the Universal Exposition, Castillon contacted Wagener to question him about Japanese horticultural practice. Five years later, Castillon used his correspondence with Ono to make his own speech about the “kaki” (fruit) at the Provincial Orientalist Conference held at Lyon in France. To present the collection itself, I use the digital document library of the Collège de France, “Salamandre”, where almost all digitized files (about 16,000) are uploaded, so that we can see not only the contents of several books of my choice on screen, but also some interesting marginal additions (handwritings, seals etc.) on them.
コレージュ・ド・フランス蔵カスティヨン伯爵植物学関係コレクションとそのデジタル化
コレージュ・ド・フランスの日本研究図書館は最近、そのカスティヨン・コレクションのデジタル化を行った。同コレクションはフランス南西部の地主、カスティヨン伯爵Comte Hippolyte de Castillon de Saint-Victor (1830-1898)の蒐集によるもので、多数の植物学・園芸学に関する和古書を含む256冊90タイトルの書籍の他に、80通の手紙（内4通は日本人から）、さらには手書きのメモから成る。私の発表の主題は、このカスティヨン伯爵とコレクションの紹介である。伯爵の当時の活動を語るために、まず彼と二人の人物、「お雇い」ドイツ人のワグネルGottfried Wagenerと植物学者の小野職愨との交流を紹介する。カスティヨンは、日本政府公式委員として1873年のウィーン万国博覧会へ派遣されていたワグネルと連絡を取り、日本の園芸に関して質問する。その5年後カスティヨンは、フランスのリヨンで開催された東洋学者地方会議で、小野からの手紙を引用・翻訳しながら柿について発表する。コレクション自体の紹介には、すでに87タイトル、数にして約16000の画像がアップロードされているコレージュ・ド・フランスのデジタル資料オンライン図書館、「サラマンドル」を利用し、いくつかの本の内容のみならず本への書込みや蔵書印などもお見せしたい。
