Art Platform Japan: A Web-Based Initiative and Research Portal on Modern and Contemporary Japanese Art
The National Center for Art Research (NCAR) was established in 2023 within the National Museum of Art, Japan, as a central institution dedicated to the promotion of the arts in Japan. While it does not have a physical library-like space, NCAR operates Art Platform Japan (APJ), a web-based portal that provides a range of tools and resources to support both domestic and international research on modern and contemporary Japanese art.
APJ serves a broad audience beyond specialists in Japanese art, including internationally active curators, art historians, researchers, students, and general users with an interest in the field. The platform offers bilingual (Japanese and English) information and resources. One of its core contents is the Dictionary of Artists in Japan (DAJ), which includes entries on approximately 5,200 artists who have played a role in shaping modern and contemporary Japanese art from the Meiji period onward. For a select group of artists, the database also includes bibliographic references, major exhibitions, and collection data to support further research.
In addition, APJ hosts several other databases, including SHŪZŌ, the Japanese Museum Collections Search. Built in collaboration with about 200 museums across Japan, SHŪZŌ allows cross-institutional searches of approximately 400,000 artwork records. Other databases include a collection of postwar contemporary Japanese art exhibitions, as well as information on Japanese galleries and art spaces.
A common feature of these databases is the clear identification of data sources for each entry. Inspired by the tradition of reference tool creation in libraries, APJ is designed to serve as a comprehensive index that integrates dispersed information to support research and scholarly inquiry. To this end, NCAR is planning to further enhance the platform’s ability to search and trace bibliographic sources.
アートプラットフォームジャパン: 日本近現代美術研究を支えるウェブポータルの構築と運用
国立アートリサーチセンター（NCAR）は2023年、日本におけるアート振興の拠点として、独立行政法人国立美術館本部内に設立された。図書館のような物理的な空間は持たないが、日本近現代美術に関する国内外の研究を支援するため、ウェブ上のポータルサイト「アートプラットフォームジャパン」（APJ）を運営し、各種ツールを提供している。
APJは、日本近現代美術研究者にとどまらず、国際的に活躍するキュレーターや美術史家、アート関係者、学生、そしてアートに関心を持つ一般層まで、幅広い利用者を対象に日英二言語での情報提供を行っている。主要コンテンツの一つである「日本アーティスト事典」（DAJ）では、明治時代以降に日本の文化芸術の発展に寄与したアーティスト約5,200名を収録し、一部の作家については参考文献や主要展覧会、主要収蔵先などの情報も掲載している。
さらにAPJでは、全国美術館収蔵品サーチ（SHŪZŌ）をはじめ、複数のデータベースを構築・公開している。「SHŪZŌ」は、日本全国約200館の美術館と連携し、約40万件におよぶ収蔵作品情報を横断的に検索可能にしたものである。このほか、戦後の日本現代美術展の情報を収録するデータベースや、国内の画廊・アートスペースの情報をまとめたデータベースの整備にも取り組んでいる。
これらのデータベースに共通するのは、各情報の出典を明示している点である。これは、伝統的な図書館におけるレファレンス・ツールの作成に倣ったものであり、APJもまた、散在する情報を統合し、調査や研究のための総合索引として機能することを企図して設計されている。今後は出典情報の検索性を高めていくことを計画している。
