Archiving Gookin’s Papers and Reassessing His Unpublished Manuscript on the Katsukawa School: From Private Draft to Global Resource
This presentation introduces an archival project that focuses on the dispersed and largely underexplored materials of Frederick W. Gookin (1853–1936), a pioneering American scholar, curator, and promoter of Japanese art in the early 20th century. While Gookin was instrumental in shaping major ukiyo-e collections and building transnational scholarly networks, the records that document his wide-ranging activities—including correspondence, research notes, exhibition materials, and image archives—have remained difficult to access and largely unorganized.
In response, this project undertakes the digitization and systematic organization of Gookin's papers housed at the Art Institute of Chicago. The initiative includes high-resolution imaging and database development to make these materials accessible for future research. These efforts not only enhance the visibility of Gookin's contributions but also offer new insights into the historical developments and institutional reception of Japanese art resources in the West.
Among these materials, special attention is given to Gookin's unpublished manuscript completed in 1931—a comprehensive study of the Katsukawa school centered on Katsukawa Shunshō. The manuscript includes chronological analyses, actor identifications, and evidence of scholarly collaboration with Japanese researchers such as Ihara Toshirō. Although the manuscript remained unpublished and gradually faded from scholarly memory, this project aims to shed new light on its value as a historical document and reposition it as a critical resource in the transnational study of Edo period visual culture.
This case exemplifies how archival work can recover overlooked materials and reintegrate them into contemporary scholarship. It also aligns with the EAJRS's mission by highlighting the essential role of archival institutions in revitalizing historical Japanese resources—resources that, once made visible, can significantly contribute to research, education, and public exhibition.
グーキン資料のアーカイブ化と勝川派未刊行原稿の再評価：私家原稿から国際資料へ
本発表では、20世紀初頭に活躍したアメリカの日本美術研究者・キュレーターであるフレデリック・W・グーキン（1853–1936）の資料群に焦点を当てたアーカイブ化プロジェクトを紹介する。グーキンは浮世絵コレクションの形成や日米間の知的ネットワーク構築に大きく貢献した人物であるが、その活動を裏付ける書簡・研究ノート・展覧会資料・図像資料などは、現在に至るまで分散・未整理のまま残されていた。
本プロジェクトでは、シカゴ美術館に所蔵されるグーキン資料を対象に、高解像度撮影とデータベース構築を進め、研究基盤としての再整備を行っている。これにより、グーキンの多面的な活動の可視化を試みるとともに、近代西洋における日本美術資料の受容・再編史にも新たな視座を提供する。
なかでも注目するのが、1931年に完成しながら未発表に終わった勝川派に関する原稿である。本原稿は、勝川春章を中心とした体系的研究であり、役者の同定や年代比定、伊原敏郎との学術的往復の痕跡などが含まれている。長く忘れられていたこの原稿を再検討することで、江戸期役者絵の国際的研究における意義を再評価する。
本事例は、見過ごされてきた資料を発掘・活用するアーカイブ実践の好例であり、EAJRSが重視する歴史的資料の共有・再接続の可能性を示すものである。
