EAJRS Cross Talk Series
EAJRS is holding opportunities for discussion and reflection on Japanese word segmentation and romanisation, issues that are often treated separately but are, in practice, closely interconnected.
As AI technologies become increasingly integrated with international discovery platforms and digital collections, the metadata landscape is becoming more interconnected and borderless. Consequently, consistent and effective romanisation is increasingly important for ensuring global access to Japanese-language resources. Decisions about word segmentation in Japanese shape its romanisation and influence the discovery and retrieval of Japan-related information worldwide.
EAJRS is uniquely placed to support this conversation through its international network of specialists who create, manage, and provide access to Japanese-language resources. While different communities have developed their own conventions for romanisation of Japanese and metadata practices to address local requirements, EAJRS recognises that the implications of these choices extend well beyond institutional and disciplinary boundaries.
The Cross Talk series provides a forum for participants to share practices, compare approaches, identify common challenges, and explore word segmentation and romanisation as complementary elements of a broader metadata system.

EAJRSでは、日本語の語分かち書きとローマ字表記について議論し、考察を深めるCross Talk を開催します。
日本語の語分かち書きとローマ字表記はしばしば別個の課題として扱われますが、実際には密接に結びついています。 AI技術の国際的なディスカバリープラットフォームやデジタルコレクションとの連携が深化するにつれて、メタデータを取り巻く環境は急速にグローバル化しています。こうした状況のもと、日本語資料への国際的なアクセスを支えるうえで、一貫性のある日本語のローマ字表記の重要性はかつてなく高まっています。日本語の語の分かちは書きはそのローマ字表記のあり方を左右し、ひいては日本関連情報の発見性や検索性に世界規模で影響を及ぼします。
EAJRSは、日本語資料の作成・管理・提供に携わる専門家の国際的なネットワークを有しており、この課題を議論するための理想的な場です。日本語のローマ字表記やメタデータ実務は、それぞれのコミュニティのニーズに応じて発展してきました。しかし、そのローマ字表示選択がもたらす影響は、今や個々の機関や専門分野の枠を超え、広く共有される情報環境にまで及んでいます。
Cross Talkシリーズは、日本語分かち書きとローマ字表記の成り立ちから、実務や事例の共有、アプローチの比較等をより広いメタデータシステムを支える相補的な要素として考察するためのフォーラムです。
