Japanese Collections in the British Library
In this presentation I will outline the scope and development of the Japanese collections of the British Library. My main focus will be the important holdings of Japanese antiquarian material in the Asia, Pacific and Africa Collections which were acquired from such notable figures such as Engelbert Kaempfer, Philipp Franz von Siebold, Ernest Satow and William Anderson. These historic collections comprise some 4,000 volumes beginning with the 8th century Hyakumantō darani and including many rare works, among them early movable-type kirishitanban printed by the Jesuits and finely illustrated ehon from the Edo Period. The India Office Records, now part of the British Library, also contain important documents relating to the early history of Anglo-Japanese relations and the English Trading Factory at Hirado.
当館日本コレクションの主柱となる古典籍は、ケンぺル、シーボルト、サトウ、アンダーソンらの所蔵を、アジア太平洋及びアフリカコレクションが長年にわたり収集し築きあげた成果である。これらの歴史的遺産ともいえるコレクションには8世紀に作成された百万塔陀羅尼をはじめ数々の希少本が包括されている。例として、イエズス会による初期活字印刷物のキリシタン版や江戸期に作成された絵本類があげられる。ちなみに日本古典籍は4,000点を数える規模である。また、鎖国前の初期日英関係や英国平戸商館の歴史を記す貴重な文書は、大英図書館に統合されたIndia Office Recordsに保存されている。
